JACOB
Jacob is a mysterious character on the TV show Lost, played by actor Mark Pellegrino. His first official appearance occurred in the season 5 finale, The Incident. There have been many mentions of Jacob throughout the series, and he is sometimes referred to as simply "him". He is the apparent leader of The Others, although most are not able to see or hear him. He seems to be ageless and has lived on the island for a very long time.
Pre-Losties
Jacob appears to have been an inhabitant of the island since at least the 1800s. He lived in the four-toed statue and was seen weaving an Ancient Egyptian tapestry. He was seen on the beach talking with another man, apparently his enemy. This other man stated that he wanted to kill Jacob, but was unable to do so and would someday find a loophole. They watched a ship sail in (possibly the Black Rock?) and discussed the nature of humanity.
Jacob's Cabin
We first saw Jacob's cabin in The Man Behind the Curtain when Ben and Locke visited it. The cabin was surrounded by an ash circle. When they entered the cabin, Ben said that Jacob was sitting in the rocking chair, which was empty. Locke thought Ben was lying to him; he became angry, and began to leave. He then heard a voice say "help me." He thought it was Ben who said it, and pointed his flashlight at him. The room began to shake, and the rocking chair began to rock on its own. Ben was thrown against the wall when he tried to grab the chair. When Locke looked at the chair, he briefly saw a man sitting there, presumably Jacob. In The Beginning of the End, Hurley was wondering in the jungle, and the cabin appeared in front of him. When he looked through the window, he saw Christian Shepherd sitting in the rocking chair. He became scared when an eye suddenly appeared in the hole he was looking through. He closed his eyes and asked for it to all go away, and when he opened his eyes, the cabin was gone. Later when visiting the cabin again, Hurley mentions he saw the cabin in an entirely different place than when Locke visited it. During Locke's second visit, he found Christian inside the cabin. He told Locke that he was speaking on Jacob's behalf. Claire, who had previously disappeared, was also in the cabin. In The Incident, Ilana, Bram, and company visited the cabin. Ilana went inside and found a piece of cloth with the statue on it. She said someone else had been using the cabin, and they burned it down. Since we find out in The Incident that Jacob had been living inside the statue, it is unknown whether this cabin was actually Jacob's.
Connections
Jacob has had encounters with several of the Losties off the island, and physically touched them in some way. The significance of this is unknown.
Kate
He met young Kate at a store, when she and her friend Tom were trying to steal a lunchbox. When she got caught, Jacob stepped in and offered to pay for the lunchbox. He made Kate promise that she'll never steal again and touched her on the nose.
Sawyer
He met young Sawyer at his parents' funeral. Sawyer was writing a letter to "Mr. Sawyer" and his pen ran out of ink. Jacob gave Sawyer a new pen, touching his hand.
Sayid
Jacob met Sayid in 2005, after Sayid got off the island. He was walking across the street with his wife, Nadia, when Jacob approached Sayid asking for directions. As Nadia crossed the street, she was hit by a car, and Jacob touched Sayid's shoulder.
Ilana
He visited Ilana while she was a patient in a Russian hospital. He asked her in Russian to help him, and she said she will. It is unknown exactly what he meant. He was not seen touching her, and it appears that they have met previously.
Locke
He met Locke when Locke's father pushed him out of an 8th story window. Jacob was seen waiting outside the building, reading a book. Locke was unconscious, but awakened when Jacob touched him. He told Locke that everything will be okay and that he was sorry this happened to him.
Sun and Jin
Jacob attended Sun and Jin's wedding. Jacob approached them after the ceremony and gave them his blessing, speaking fluent Korean. He touched both of them on the shoulder, and told them to not take their love for granted.
Jack
Jacob met Jack after Jack performed his first surgery. Jack tried to buy an Apollo candy bar from a vending machine, but it got stuck. When Jack walked away, Jacob gave him the candy bar, touching his band, and said "it needed a little push."
Hurley
During the time after Hurley got off the island, he was in prison. When he was released, he got into a taxi, and Jacob was waiting for him in it. He told Hurley that he needed to return to the island and that his curse was actually a blessing. He told him to get on Ajira Flight 316, and touched him on the shoulder. As he left the cab, Hurley told him that he forgot his guitar case, and Jacob said that it wasn't his guitar.
Trivia
- Danny Pickette mentioned Jacob's List in I Do, saying that Jack was not on the list
- In Par Avion, Mikhail says that Kate isn't on Jacob's list because she's flawed, Sayid because he's "weak and frightened", and Locke because he's angry.
- Ben said that Jacob wanted Walt to be brought to Room 23.
- In Dead Is Dead, Ben refused to kill baby Alex, saying that it was not "Jacob's will"
- In the Room 23 video, one of the images says "God loves you as He loved Jacob"
- On the cover of the third season DVD set, the phrase "Jacob loves you" is visible.
- Ben claimed that Jacob cured Rachel's (Juliet's sister) cancer.
Death
In 2007, "Locke" revealed that he wanted Ben to kill Jacob. They found him inside the four-toed statue sitting in his rocking chair. Jacob realized that "Locke" was really his enemy and that he finally "found his loophole." Ben asked Jacob why he was neglected and favored Locke. Ben asked "What about me?" and Jacob replied "What about you?" This infuriated Ben, and he stabbed Jacob twice. Jacob's last words were "they're coming" before "Locke" pushed Jacob into a fire. He is presumed dead.
